General About Me
Alyson grew up in England but has spent most of her adult life living abroad. She has lived in both Europe and Asia and sees the advantages of living in both, however after careful consideration she would always opt for a warm climate. Alyson writes short stories in her spare time and has won and been runner up in several Writers News and Writing Magazine competitions. She writes occasional copy for travel websites, mainly about Asia where she currently lives and would love to have more time to write more regularly. Since joining Writers Abroad Alyson has learnt about the benefits of belonging to a writing group, and is enormously grateful for the help and support offered by her cyber friends. "Spooked", a Bridge House anthology of ghost stories includes one of Alyson's short stories and is available for purchase on the home page of this website.

January 2012

Started the New Year on a high being  short listed in Della Galton's win a book competition. My piece is below:

Jill chewed the pencil, staring at the first of her New Year’s resolutions.

Finish sweater

She sighed. As a teacher, time was short, evenings mostly spent marking the horrific fantasies of Damian Hedges or the romantic warbling of young Romeo Sutcliffe. Holidays were her chance to catch up.

Ignoring her headache she started upstairs and searched the wardrobe for the bag of wool from last winter’s project. Nothing in the airing cupboard or the spare room either. Finally she tried the attic. Amidst the boxes and suitcases was the bag.

Jill took it to the sitting room and pulled out the contents. The yarn had been teased into a bundle. Her first thought was the cat had been playing with it. She started to untangle the mess. Pieces of the fluffy wool came away in her hands. Instead of being a continuous length it was short stands.

Jill frowned. This was not good. Then the ball shuddered. Jill stiffened. Warily she eased a hole in it and peered inside. Curled up and snoring was a tiny field mouse.

Swallowing and resisting the temptation to throw the ball down and let the cat deal with it, she drew the edges of the wool together and carried it outside to the shed. She placed it in a corner on a sack.

After tidying away the needles and pattern Jill put the kettle on. She crossed out ‘finish sweater’ from the list, and added ‘be kind to animals’, putting a check beside it.

Hi Alyson

I enjoyed reading your stories.  Congrats on winning/being placed.  You can build up tension and I was gripped by them.  Your characterisation is excellent.

I too prefer warm countries. It hasn't rained here since April!  All the water comes from the Nile.
